Ryan: DAMN AND BLAST!

A couple of weeks ago, my laptop died on me. What a complete disaster. I had projects to finish and had to finish them using my Galaxy Note instead. My laptop though is now repaired but I do not have time to go down to get it.

These two weeks had been torturous. Almost everything I need and want is in my digital workhorse. My life was based on my laptop. Photoshop, Lightroom, Bridge are all installed on my laptop too. Imagine the anger and frustration of having to re-install all three programs into my desktop to complete the project I was attending to.

They called me yesterday to tell me that my laptop is ready!! Now, all I have to do is travel there, get the laptop, travel back and spend hours re-installing everything. But guess what? I have got no time! Why can't they deliver the bloody laptop back to me? It's part of customer service is it not? I am willing to pay for this service but they do not offer it. Even Samsung offers free delivery when under-warranty period phones are spoilt.

Oh wells, I have ranted enough. Rest assured though, other's mistake shall never be ours. This type of shoddy customer service can never be found at AREM Photos.

Melanie: Shooting People

I picked up photography back when I was 16 and at that time, I never really cared for people photography. I never liked it, most probably because the only type of people photography I was exposed to was the 'family portraits' or 'posing with friends' kind. At that time, with my amateur photography skills, all I did was nature shots or shots of beautiful buildings when I was on vacation. This went on until I was 17 and someone introduced me to street photography, which is people shooting in a way, and I was fascinated by the shots that captured the candid expressions of people whether they are happy or sad or whatever. I was amazed because the photos showed the most honest human behaviour and in such a beautiful way.

This picture, taken in Chinatown showed two happy old men wheeling their carts (is it carts?) and looking like they were satisfied with their simple life.

I was so amazed, I had to try it out for myself. This is a shot I took of a couple when I was in gardens by the bay. I really liked this photograph because I was able to capture the love that one person is giving to the other. It was a spur of the moment shot and I was glad that it turned out to be alright.

I was a little shy when I was doing this, and I wasn't able to take a photo with my camera pointing towards a person's face, so most of my shots of people were of either their sides or their backs. However, I was glad to have discovered something that I really liked and was happy that that had fueled my passion for photography.

Lastly, because I couldn't help it, here is a nature shot that I really liked:

I managed to find a very pretty plant to do this on, but I was a little sad that I didn't get my focal length right and the left and bottom part was a little blurred, not the effect I wanted. Anyway, here is a closer look of the same plant:

Really love the heart-shaped leaves. Had to find an area that have the least rotten leaves, but in the end, I still got some in my shot. Oh wells. :)

That's all for now,
Melanie

Ryan: Film and Digital

Photography has always been my passion. I can still remember the analog days when i used to play with this plastic compact my mother gave to me as a present. If I am not mistaken, it was a KODAK. Anyway, we used to tour Singapore while me and my sister held on to our beautiful 35mm compacts. I will always remember a picture I took at Suntec City. It is probably somewhere in my photo albums right now. I still remember how we used to hand the camera over to our parents and they will wind the film and have it sent to be developed. When the pictures came back, we get very excited and compared to see who had the better pictures. That was when I was 5.

Fast forward to modern times, we seldom see people holding on to film cameras. Kids these days snap away with their phones while others use small DSLRs. They may not have been able to experience and appreciate the 35mm format. With the digital world we live in today, sensors in cameras are getting smaller to be able to fit into a small body. Children are less exposed to photography.

My Uncle passed on some of his old Nikons to me. Just this one gesture, I embraced films just like I did when I was 5. The familiar smell of crabs in a plastic container returned to my camera bag. I am so happy i managed to experience the film days. Films are simply magical. Even though i am unable to live with my current digital set-up, it is always nice to return to the "good ol' days". Film brings back so much memories. For me, the film days are not yet over. In fact, I think a brighter future lies ahead. New generations may not appreciate older manual equipment. I do. Do you?
